Research Description: The evolution of novel life history features is generally associated to novel modifications in developmental mechanisms. How do these modifications arise and what genetic basis is involved in the changes? To what extent will developmental modifications lead to the evolution of new life history strategies? To address these questions, we study the developmental modifications for three life history features: (1)Evolution of a stage specific behavior associated to the survival of the species, i.e. É??nictationÉ?? behavior in dauer stage nematode roundworms. (2)Evolution of asexual development (budding) associated to the reproduction of the species, i.e. budding and vascular regeneration in colonial ascidians. (3)Evolution of regeneration associated to selective pressures on the life history of the species (reproduction or predation), i.e. blastema formation and tissue/organ replacement in policladid flatworms.
