Taxa Studied: Other, "Free living" amoebae such as Naegleria and Acanthamoeba
Techniques Employed: Degenerate PCR, Sanger Sequencing, Antibody Staining, RNA interference(RNAi), Epifluoresence Microscopy, Confocal Microscopy
Research Description: Amoebae are very diverse organisms even within a single "Genus". My lab is attempting to explore this diversity and to explain why some members of this group are pathogenic and why others are not. In addition I have a company "Amoebics Ltd" which is using this huge diversity to produce anti-bacterial agents against human bacterial pathogens such as MRSA.
